Parking Reminders

In response to an increase in complaints regarding parking violations in the Guemes Ferry Dock area, the Anacortes Police Department is providing this information to remind drivers of the distances they need to observe when parking their vehicles, especially on residential streets where failure to leave the proper space can severely restrict visibility and create dangerous traffic situations.

We recognize that available parking is limited, especially when the car ferry is not in operation. We ask that you take the time to review this information and make sure you are in compliance when parking your vehicle. Not only to avoid the possibility of a $38 fine or impound but out of respect for the people who live and drive in the neighborhood you are parking in.

Vehicles may not be left parked for longer than 72 hours unless they are parked in an area of the street immediately adjacent to the registered owners residence. (Anacortes Municipal Code 10.12.010)

When parallel parking, the vehicle must be parked facing in the direction of travel with the right hand wheels of the vehicle within 12 inches of the curb or edge of the parking area. (RCW 46.61.575)

No person may park a vehicle in violation of an officially erected sign prohibiting parking in that area. (RCW 46.61.570(a)(x))

When parking near a driveway (public or private) there must be 5 feet from the front or rear of your vehicle to the curbing marking the beginning of the driveway. (RCW 46.61.570 (b)(i))

No parking is allowed within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. (RCW 46.61.570(b)(ii))

No parking is allowed within 20 feet of a crosswalk (note, crosswalks do not need to be marked but are considered 10 feet from the corner of an intersection into the approaching street). So basically, do not park within 30 feet of an intersection. (RCW 46.61.570(b)(iii))

No parking is allowed within 30 feet of a traffic control sign (stop or yield etc). Again, sticking to the not parking within 30 feet of an intersection. (RCW 46.61.570(b)(iv)

Any violation of these regulations can result in a $38 infraction. If your vehicle is determined to be blocking a driveway or somehow impairing safe travel, it can also be subject to impound. Also, make sure your vehicle registration information is up to date so attempts can be made to contact you prior to impound or ticket.
