Vandalism at the Guemes Ferry Dock
Steve Cox, Guemes Ferry manager, reported two acts of vandalism in the last week at the Guemes Island ferry dock. After throwing posts protecting the electrical boxes on the ramp into the water, vandals opened the electrical boxes and flipped breakers. Steve expressed his concern about the danger in these activites and will install locks on the boxes. He will also report these acts of vandalism to the Sheriff.

Cox could not say whether the vandalism was a misguided way of protesting the County's recent decision to extend the weeknight ferry schedule but offered these comments on the prospect of islanders protesting the decision:

As I mentioned, I have had a short discussion with our legal staff. As stated, I will not interfere with any ones' right to protest, even on ferry facilities. So long as folks do not interfere with the ferry and loading and create safety problems everything will be fine.

If they interfere with the ferry, I have three choices, depending on severity of problem - 1) Shut down the ferry; 2) Call the Coast Guard (Homeland Security) and/or 3) Call the sheriff/police.

NONE of these things do I want to do. The relationship has deteriorated enough! Without calling in law enforcement!

Ian Woofenden comments, "County government would do well to ask how they can be part of the community... how to build a strong connection with the citizens here, graced with mutual respect."
