Progress Report On Ferry Work

LineTime's questions were sent on October 6 to Steve Cox, ferry manager. Steve Flude responded October 11:

Can you help us understand the reasons for the delay?

We noticed that the Commissioners signed work change consent orders related to the ferry work earlier this week.

Can you tell us what they cover?

The change orders are for additional repairs to the out drives due to foreign material that was found in the out drive as part of a routine inspection during drydock. There are also some mechanical repairs to steering apparatus in the out drive. These repairs are complete as of 10/10/05.

The other change orders deal with unexpected delays caused by parts delivery problems due partially to parts coming out of the New Orleans area as well as the need to fabricate certain parts for the new motors. (Parts that could only be manufactured after delivery of the motors.)

Essentially, what we're seeing with the new motors is akin to popping a new, state of the art motor into a 1960's era vehicle. Almost nothing will fit quite right. And, despite our best attempts to make it a perfect fit prior to installation, there were hoses and flanges and other various sundry items that didn't quite fit. So, "on the fly" changes have been necessary to perform extra work (that costs time and money) so that when the new motors are finally installed they are well connected to the existing piping and conduit and they are easily accessible for maintenance.

How is the work on the docks coming? When will work begin on the Guemes side? Will that require returning to the Warrior and, if so, will we experience the same schedule disruptions after the 10th that we had earlier due to lower tides? We are finished with the dock work until after the ferry returns to service. We will then be working on the Guemes dock but only after hours during the week. This will limit any interference with service.
